Trusting God for Direction in your life

Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.”

Have you ever wondered what is going on in your life; what exactly is happening? Why do so many bad things happen, even when you do good? Many are asking the same thing. What is going on in this world? Everything seems so evil and it feels like there is no escape from any of it. Even the economy is shaky at best, food and crops aren’t promised as too much rain this year led to many damaged crops, and there are so many diseases and sicknesses plaguing people everywhere. Where is the escape?

God is the perfect escape route for all of this. Although you can’t see what’s going on and why all these things are happening, God can. God can see ahead, past the storms of life, and He can see which path is best for you. But if you don’t put your trust in the Lord’s hands, how can you be sure that you will be on the right path?

When you try to go through this life on your own, that is, apart from God, you are left to figure out what choices to make, and what paths to go down. The issue with this is, you are also left with the consequences and dangers that follow. I’m not saying that following God will never result in a hardship or that you will never face another storm again in your life; I’m saying that if you follow God, He will show you the right steps to take that keep you in His Will for your life.

Walking with God and seeking His direction is the way to making better choices. Waiting patiently, surrendered fully to the Lord will lead to living in His rest and His peace that is beyond understanding. Even in the harshest of environments and situations, God’s children can live at peace and enjoy rest in the Lord. Can you imagine going through the worst storm of your life, one where the next wave can literally capsize you and leave you drowning, all while being at perfect rest? This is what Jesus can do for you.

When storms are approaching and it doesn’t look like there is a safe path, turn to God

Isaiah 30:21
“Your own ears will hear him.
Right behind you a voice will say,
‘This is the way you should go,’
whether to the right or to the left.”

If you are struggling in life, regardless of what it is, God can help you. Of course, He isn’t a magic Genie who will simply grant your wishes. Instead, He will work with you to build a relationship with Him. Through this relationship, He will help you and teach you and protect you, as you dig into His word, the bible, you will learn more on being obedient and surrendered to God.

We follow the First Fruits principle that all that we own belongs to God and that we give him at least the first 10% of our income back to Him, as He owns it all but He asks for the first 10% as a tithe. As we are obedient to God in this, we have found that no matter what our bank balance God has been faithful to us that we have never been in lack, our bills are paid and there is food to spare.

God stretches the 90% finances further when we give Him the first 10% to our local bible-believing church, then we can do with the whole 100% on our own.

Growing in God requires a commitment. God is always with you, but you aren’t necessarily always with God. What I mean is, you can have days where you pull away from God and do your own thing without even thinking of Him once through the day. In fact, you can live a whole life that way. But the only way to build a relationship with God is through daily interaction with Him praying, reading the bible, singing or speaking worship and praise to Jesus.

What many people do is wait until something goes horribly wrong, a severe storm in their life, then they run to God and ask and hope and pray that He’ll magically fix it. God might fix it, but this would be out of character for Him. Instead, a relationship with God is built much like a relationship with an intimate partner. You each spend time together getting to know one another, and through much intimate time together, trust is built.

As you put your trust in God more fully, God will respond by guiding you into safety. He will direct your path and He will speak to you about your big decisions. But you must be in constant communication with the Lord to know His voice.

It’s through a relationship with God that you gain wisdom and discernment from Him. You will start to see the storms coming well in advance. You will be mindful of what’s going on around you, and you will see things in a different way. When you put your faith and trust in God, He will give you escape routes and protect you from the dangers of the enemy, Satan.

Even when you go through the storm, God will sustain you

Isaiah 41:10
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

I can’t promise that God won’t allow storms in your life that you must go through; nobody can. However, I can say that God will get you through the storm in one piece if you surrender to Him and put your confidence in Him.

All through the bible, God has helped His children. In most instances, God allowed them to go through a hard time or to go into battle with a huge enemy, but He sustained them; He helped them and gave them victory, even in the most unlikely scenarios. He wants to do the same for you.

If you see a storm on the horizon, a financial storm or a family storm or a health storm, God doesn’t want you to turn and run. God wants you to face your storms and battles head on, with His guidance and protection.

If your storm involves financial lack or a lack of basic needs, God doesn’t want you to sit in worry about what you don’t have; He wants you to sit in praise and worship of Him for the things He’s already provided. Surely, even in your worst situation ever, there is something you could thank God for?

At the time of this writing, my family is in a tough financial situation. Due to many past choices that I made, we have debt and we are at risk of drowning. However, I can safely say that we are only at risk of drowning if we take our focus off of God, which we don’t plan to. I am confident that even if we don’t ever see great prosperity in life that God will still provide and keep us afloat; I am thankful for that.

In this time, I have a choice. I can get upset and scream at God and turn away from Him, or I can move even closer to Him and trust that He has a plan. I can only know how God will deliver my family through this situation if I am willing to be patient with God for as long as He needs. In this time, I can choose to live for Him, to worship Him, to learn about Him, and to do various works for Him while being a good steward of what He has given me. I personally am choosing to trust Him and to keep working for Him while patiently and expectantly waiting for Him to show me how He will work out this situation for our good.

I don’t share my personal story for entertainment, but for encouragement. I share this to show that God is faithful, even when He doesn’t answer our prayers the way we would expect Him to. God will uphold His children; He will provide for them and give them rest. If you are in lack, seek the Lord for provision and rest. Don’t let the storm, or the threat of the storm overtake you. Put on His Armor and go to battle – on your knees in prayer.

It’s through the storms that faith is built

James 1:2-4
“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So, let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

The main objective in this life is to trust in Jesus and walk in harmony with Him. Building faith in Him and maintaining an attitude of faith in Christ is where you will find your rest. No matter what is going on in your life, you can find rest in Jesus.

The reason that God will let you go through the trials in life is not to punish you, but to grow you. God is all about building the person. The only way you can build muscle or skill is to work it and practice; through repetition of trials, faith is built, just like a muscle is built through repetition of lifting weights.

If you follow God for five years, you will still have storms and trials in your life then, too. The difference is in how you handle them. The storm that nearly cripples you in the beginning of your walk with God will seem nothing more than a speedbump in the road after five years of walking with God. This is why daily Bible reading and praying and communication with God is necessary.

It’s through the daily interaction with God that your character will grow. As your knowledge about Him grows, you will remember these as facts when the storms come about. Instead of worrying about how bad the day ahead will be, you will remember how God helped you last time. Then, you will be able to apply faith in Him more readily and won’t succumb to fearful thoughts that Satan tries to put in your head.

The Apostle Paul referred to this life as a race and as a fight. This means, there will be round after round after round with little breaks in between. He is trying to tell us to keep in the fight and to allow God to build our endurance and faith.

The next time a storm is on your horizon, take your focus off the clouds and look to Jesus. Seek Him for safety and direction. Understand that even if He directs you through the storm, He will go through it with you. He will uphold you with His righteous right hand and He won’t leave your side. The worse the storm gets, the more you must seek Him through prayer, praise, and the reading of His Word.

This life will cause you grief if you let it. Satan, the devil, is constantly trying to get the better of you. His only goal is to destroy you. God will provide a safe route of escape from the temptations of the enemy and the attacks of the devil, but you need to be surrendered to God, not the devil. The one you give your attention and time to is the one you are surrendered to.

Who is the first one that you think about upon waking in the morning? What are your first thoughts like and how what do you allow your thinking to grow into?

If you normally wake up and instantly start thinking about how bad the day will be or how someone offended you yesterday and what you will do today if they do it again, then I can say that you are allowing the devil to take control of your thoughts. Instead, if these come, switch your focus to God.

The easiest way to put your attention onto God and away from the devil is to put on an attitude of gratitude. Give thanks for anything you can think of. Each day is a gift from God. Thank Him for another chance to walk with Him and to learn from Him. Thank Him for a chance to be of service to Him. As you start doing this, more thoughts will be brought to your mind. God won’t leave you empty-minded here. If you are willing, God will put enough things on your mind to sit and give thanks for an entire day. All you have to do is be willing and to go to God with a surrendered heart.
