Do you find that you have more than your share of hard days? Are you discouraged because life just doesn’t seem to be working the way you want it to? In this article, I will share 10 of my favorite bible verses to help show you that God does care and that He will help you if you seek Him.
To say that these are the 10 best verses comes down to personal preference. You might have your own list of best verses for encouragement, I encourage you to share yours in the comments below. I’ve heard that there are more than five-thousand promises from God in the bible, so for me to pick the 10 best for everyone might not be possible.
Regardless, trying to live with a devil attacking you is difficult. Trying to do this without the power of the Holy Spirit in your life is impossible. Satan is only powerful to those who don’t have a relationship with Jesus or if you don’t know how to use the authority given to you by Jesus. If you find that you are having many bad days and thoughts and that your mood seems to always be low, it’s more than possible that Satan has a stronghold in your life and he’s destroying you from the inside out.
If you surrender to God and seek His protection, He will rescue you from the devil. It’s the power of the Holy Spirit that defeats Satan, and it’s a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that opens the door for the Holy Spirit to come live inside you. But when you do this, you can draw on His power to defeat the devil when he attacks and discourages you.
If you want to learn more about the devil and his tactics against you, check out my book, “Don’t let the devil defeat you.”
In this book, I go into great detail about the attacks of the devil, and I lay down a solid biblical foundation for you to build your relationship with Jesus on. This book will teach you what to look for with the devil, and how to cast him out of your life for good.

10 Go-to verses for encouragement
I have included ten Scriptures here that describe the character of God and show how He is, and will be there for you when you need Him.
I encourage you to develop and strengthen your relationship with God each day by reading the bible and praying to Him often. By doing this, you will grow closer to Him and the devil will have less and less real estate in your life. When the devil has nowhere left to live inside you, he won’t have any power over you.
If you give the devil openings into your life, he will take the opportunity and he will come in and make himself at home. He’s messy and he breaks stuff. He will make you feel bad and discouraged. Get rid of him, and any signs of him from your life by moving close to God and drawing on His unlimited mighty power through the Holy Spirit.
I also encourage you to memorize as many of these verses as possible, or to go through the bible and find your favorites. Either way, arm yourself with the Word of God, which is the Sword of the spirit. By doing this, when the devil does come to attack you and discourage you, you will be able to defeat him and send him away.
Let’s get started.
1. Isaiah 41:10
“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
I have returned to this Scripture time and time, again. In fact, many have. There is great comfort in knowing that God is there on your side and that He is victorious. The devil will have you believe that God is nowhere to be found and that you’ve been deserted. However, God never abandons you and is ready to help you right now.
If you are feeling down or discouraged, send the devil away and turn to God. Ask Him in prayer to lift you up and build you up. Tell Him of your concerns of life and seek His direction.
Submission and surrender to God are of utmost importance in this life. So many people are trying to do this life alone, or on their own apart from God. These people might even believe in God and Jesus might even be their Lord and Savior, however, they are doing life alone.
If you want God to help you, reach out to Him. If you are feeling discouraged and frustrated and about ready to give up, just know that this is the work of the devil. He will make you feel this way every day if you let him.
Instead of giving the enemy power through acceptance and agreement to what he’s saying, ignore him and find out what God’s saying. God will respond by giving you some peace and refreshment in your soul.
2. Philippians 4:13
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Most likely the most famous verse alongside John 3:16, this verse promises strength in any situation.
However, the verse reads, “through Christ.”
This is an important takeaway because if you don’t have Jesus Christ in your life as your Lord and Savior, this verse means nothing and has no power for you. However, if your faith is firmly rooted in Jesus, then when you are discouraged or fearful or need a boost, this verse is pure truth.
Going to Jesus should be your first step to any plan. Even if you aren’t in a situation of threat or concern or despair, you can bring your plans to Jesus and seek strength from Him.
No matter what you do, the devil will be right there to tell you that you won’t succeed or that even if you do accomplish your goal, it won’t be good enough. Let God be your judge and don’t listen to the liar, Satan.
If you are feeling down, take some time and pray to Jesus. He is known as the Healer, and He won’t let you down. Even if you don’t get delivered from your situation, He will comfort you and give you hope. But you need to go to Him.
3. Psalm 55:22
“Cast your burden on the Lord,
And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.”
Casting your cares on the Lord is the best thing you can do; especially, when discouraged. If all your hope is gone and you’re about ready to give up, then go ahead and give up on your worries.
If you do this, He will give you peace of mind and rest. Satan will have you weighed down and burdened with worries and fears and doubts and confusion, but God is telling you to give all those issues to Him right now and seek His promises in His Word today.
By going to the bible and reading about His promises to you, you will only fill your “encouragement bank” and be lifted out of the negative emotions that the devil may have brought you to. Learning God’s word is the best defense against the enemy. If you are feeling down or discouraged, knowing and reciting Scripture is a quick way to get the devil to leave and to strengthen your faith in Jesus.
4. Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”
Aren’t we all looking for direction? And, isn’t it discouraging when we go down the wrong path?
“What is the Will of God?”; “What does God want for my life?”; “How do I know what I’m supposed to do?”
I’m sure most of us have asked these questions on some level in our life. But God will show you what He wants from you and your life if you are willing to seek Him and surrender to Him.
The first thing He will always require, and this is His Will for you; turn away from sinful living and follow Jesus. Next, help others do the same. This is a starting point, and I’ve personally found it to grow into bigger things and lead to a feeling of fulfillment and joy that I couldn’t find elsewhere.
By turning to God and making yourself available to Him, He can and will open great doors in your life. He will give you a life you were never expecting. He uses the unlikely people to do great jobs for the Heavenly Kingdom, so you can’t say you aren’t this or that; none of the “Greats” of the bible started off great.
If you are discouraged, seek God and find out if you are doing the right thing in life. This might require some consistent searching and praying, but He will soon respond. Look at how Jesus lived and see if there is something you can get started with.
By getting rid of any sinful living, you are essentially decluttering your mind so that you can hear from God. Keep at it and keep the enemy out of your life while trying to do things that help build the Kingdom of God. You will surely find passion, purpose, and direction, all of which lead to a rich and satisfying life.
5. Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
I spent so many years of my life as a procrastinator. I had an excuse for everything. But I found that when I would put my focus on God and trust Him to help me get through whatever I was about to attempt, my success rate would increase.
The enemy is great at making you overthink things. As soon as you get a great idea, and it probably is a great idea, the devil will be right there helping you to think of as many reasons why this could fail.
Well, I say, consider all reasons of why something could fail, then seek God’s strength and minimize those potential failures. By doing this, you can then focus on all the reasons you would succeed.
I’m reminded of another Scripture that God gave us;
“Commit your works to the Lord,
And your thoughts will be established.”
By studying these Scriptures, you can gain a sense of God’s providence. You can move forward with confidence and determination. Instead of allowing the devil to discourage you in your daily efforts and life goals, commit those plans to the Lord and trust Him.
6. Deuteronomy 31:8
“And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”
For me, I think a feeling of abandonment is my biggest issue that leads to discouragement. I get to feeling like God isn’t answering my prayers, that He’s not moving in my life, and that He’s not helping me succeed at anything, even though I commit my actions and plans to Him.
However, I am still learning that patience is vitally important when it comes to God. He hears the prayers of His children and He answers the prayers that are according to His Will. What I often fail to remember is that He is going ahead of me and paving the way for success.
So, when I get discouraged and start listening to the lies of the devil, I can get to a point where I give up on God and figure that He’s too busy or that He isn’t going to help me. Again, this is a big fat lie from Satan.
In contrast, when I do hold firm to God’s truth, and when I do wait patiently for Him to answer, I’m never dissatisfied with the results. In fact, they are often better than I was expecting.
If you are going through something that is discouraging, understand that God has promised to not abandon you. Even though He might seem distant or silent, have faith that He’s there, just ahead of you, making the path clear for you. All you need to do is keep taking steps in the way that He’s leading you and keep doing what you know to do.
7. Isaiah 40:31
“But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.”
There’s definitely a theme in this article; trust God.
Well, that’s not bad advice. I know it seems like you keep trying and trying but are only spinning your wheels and going nowhere. But I want you to know that you are on the right path if you keep trying each day to seek God and live in a way that is pleasing to Him.
In due time, and I’m not sure exactly how long that is for you, God will show you new milestones in your life. It could be tomorrow, and it could be in a month. Either way, God expects each of us to keep doing exactly what the bible tells us to do each day.
The bible is your source of information and direction for life. By studying, journaling and meditating on the bible you will learn new ways of living and serving God. He will reveal certain things to you that will help you to grow and promises that will strengthen your faith and bring you encouragement.
It’s the people who keep their trust in God who are strengthened and are protected by God. If you are doing the best you can each day to honor and serve God, but it appears He has abandoned you, I encourage you to keep doing your best and start looking for all the ways that God is providing for you in your life. Keep a journal or diary of these things so you will remember. Then, patiently and expectantly, believe God to do great things in your life.

8. Hebrews 13:5
“Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”
Contentment is another weak point for me. I’m sure there are some reading this article who share the same weakness. Especially, with all the extravagant vehicles and toys and technology and beautiful places to live and such, wanting for money becomes a major factor. And, Satan will surely use these and the fantasy of wealth and money to get your focus off God.
When I get too caught up in dreaming about a better lifestyle or more money, I get discouraged in life very quickly. I even get depressed sometimes.
God promises a lot of things in the bible, but He never promises financial prosperity. What He does offer in the bible is His Wisdom, and with wisdom, you can be a good steward. When you practice good stewardship with money, it tends to grow and multiply.
So, if money, or the lack thereof is bringing you down, consider how you’ve been handling it; would God consider you to be a good steward of money and the things He trusts you with? If you aren’t a good steward of these, do you feel that God should give you more?
I’ve had to beat this into my own head because I wasn’t a good steward of money, or pretty much anything else God entrusted me with. However, I’ve been practicing good stewardship and being grateful for what I have, and I find that I’m generally happier and more content.
With our finances, my wife and I tithe faithfully to our local church and have done so for more than twenty years. We have seen God’s hand in our finances, month after month. We have learned that God hasn’t abandoned us, even though things are tight, and the budget doesn’t seem to ever balance.
So, if money and a spirit of discontentedness has you down, seek God and practice gratitude and good stewardship. This is the key to leveling up and gaining more responsibility in life from God.
9. Philippians 4:6-7
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Prayer is powerful! This is your direct line of communication to God. Prayer is the way you bring your concerns, desires, and praises to God. He doesn’t generally answer you in an audible voice, but you will find the ways He answers you if you’re looking.
He might speak to you through someone; He might show you a Scripture in the bible that seems to stand out and answer a question you have; and, He might put a strong thought on your mind with a knowing in your gut.
The thing is, God will make you know what He wants you to know. If you have an unrealistic idea of how God should speak to you, you will likely get discouraged.
This Scripture tells you to pray about everything. This doesn’t just mean only for others or only for world peace or only to help the starving children; those are good things too. But, this verse means to pray for anything and everything that matters to you; great and small and is of importance in your life. Some things you pray about might not line up with God’s Will, and I believe He will show you that, too, if you’re paying attention.
But the Scripture goes on to say that He will give you peace that surpasses understanding and that He will give you protection as well.
If the devil has you feeling like God doesn’t answer your prayers, or that life is no good, then give those thoughts to God in prayer and trade them for peace in your soul.
10. Romans 8:28
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
Another famous verse, this one tells you that God will take the harm that Satan intends for you and turn it to good; that is, if you love God and are living according to His Will.
One thing that many people fail to understand is that God wants all of you. He doesn’t only want to hear from you when you need something from Him. If you have no needs, then He still wants to hear your praises to Him. Either way, He wants to hear from you.
I believe that God is just and fair. I believe that if you live according to His Word and Will for your life, that He will do what He says He’ll do. But there’s only one way to find out, right?
This Scripture is very encouraging for those who are trying to live for God each day. And, God doesn’t require this to be perfect or pretty; He just wants the best you can do. By surrendering to Him, He will provide for, and protect you. Even though the devil wants to destroy you, God will uphold you with His righteous right hand.
As we previously discussed, you will need to walk daily with God to find out His detailed plan for your life. But to get started, do away with evil living, seek a daily relationship with Jesus, and use whatever gifts and talents you have to help encourage others to also develop a relationship with Jesus.
Satan will try to discourage you any time he can. He will use anything and everything against you. When he runs out of truth’s, he’ll resort to lies. And, he will never stop.
But God is greater than the devil. God will not only protect you and provide for you, But He will also turn the harmful attacks into good for you. God wants you to experience a great life; not a life of defeat and discouragement. So, if you are feeling down and discouraged, seek Jesus right away and start the healing process.
Surrender fully to Him and be willing to do what He directs you to. It’s through faith and obedience that you will find your success with God; and, it’s in a strong relationship with God that you will find peace and joy in your life.
