21 Scriptures on How To Be A Christian

Our need of the Savior

God has said all have sinned and all fall short of His standard since the fall in the Garden of Eden. Thus, no one on their own is good enough to enter God’s presence without the covering and acceptance of Jesus God’s son. All humans were doomed to an eternity in hell from the fall in the garden without a hope, till Jesus.

Romans 3:23-24
“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.”

Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”

We now have a glorious hope in Jesus, because God sent Him to earth, to be born of a virgin, and to die in our place to be resurrected on the third day to show His power over death to save us for all eternity. Jesus died and took our sins upon Himself at the cross and rose again to Life. We can now be made right before God the Father and relationship with God can be restored by accepting Jesus as your savior. How exciting is that? Jesus is Alive! And you can have a relationship with Him.

The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.”

John 3:16
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”
Acts 4:11-12
“For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says,
‘The stone that you builders rejected
has now become the cornerstone.’

There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.”

John 14:6
“Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”

Accept Jesus and He will come into your life

My wife remembers from back when she was four years old, she says her mom came into the living-room where she was playing and said to her, “Jesus is Alive, do you want to ask Him into your heart?”, and she said yes and became a Christian that very day.

Acceptance of Jesus is the only way to have Salvation and to spend eternity in Heaven with God. God specifically said that Jesus is the only way. There is no act, no sacrifice, no offering, no price, no other religion, no other god, no prophet, no star or planetary system, no beast, and no man-made image or idol that can connect us with God and give us Salvation; none.

If you want Salvation; that is, if you want to avoid spending eternity in Hell with Satan, where there will be eternal torment, you must accept Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life and believe in Him. I don’t know how to express this in any other way. There are so many who are being deceived.

Open your heart to Jesus today. Ask Jesus to come into your life. Confess that you are a sinner and ask Him to forgive you. Ask Him to lead you and guide you into true Life with the Father.

There is only one way to be saved; to believe in Jesus. No strings attached and no fine print. There are no works or deeds that must be done to be saved. If you have accepted Jesus as Lord and you believe in Him, you do not need to do anything more. You will go to Heaven. However, we are told to store up treasures in Heaven and to do good works for eternal rewards. So, how you live as a Christian will determine your rewards in Heaven, but by belief in Jesus alone, you are saved. This is a free gift of God by His Grace alone.

Romans 10:9
“If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Mark 16:16
“Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.”
Ephesians 2:8-9
“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.”

Grow from newborn to mature in Christ

1 Peter 2:2
“Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment”

Once we accept Jesus into our lives, we have effectively died to our old sinful self and have been reborn into New Life. This means, just like a baby, we must grow. We must learn and grow. We do this by spending time with God and with fellow believers. Becoming a part of a church is very important as a first step after becoming a Christian.

In a church, you can confess your faith to them, and you can get baptized. This symbolizes the death of your old self and the resurrection of your new self, which is a reflection of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Leaning on other believers for support and knowledge is one of the main benefits of the church, called fellowship. Gathering for praise and worship altogether where the Holy Spirit is all throughout is another benefit. Also, as a new believer, there will be spiritual gifts that God gives you that are meant to help others in the church. We are all a part of one body, the Church. We are called by God to fellowship, to help each other and to strengthen one another.

As a new believer, and by the way, this is an ongoing part of being a Christian and developing a meaningful relationship with God, there are a few main things we must do in addition to fellowship. These are; pray, read the Word of God, which is the bible, praise and worship God, and be obedient to God’s Word and His voice, once you learn to discern God’s voice.

A special note here, God will never tell you or give you a feeling to do something that is against His moral law or the bible. So a feeling to donate or give to the poor or to encourage someone those can be from God. But a voice telling you to hurt yourself or others or do other things that go against God’s Word is 100% not from God.

Pray as often as possible

Philippians 4:6
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.”
Jude 1:20
“But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love.”

A healthy relationship with Jesus is the safe way to live. Instead of getting distracted with various theologies and opinions of the bible, work hard each day to build on your relationship with Jesus, first.

Don’t let your faith depend on one pastor or minister of the Lord. Each are human and may at some point let you down. As you mature in Christ you may find that you disagree on some issues outside of Salvation in Christ alone, especially as you are a new Christian. This doesn’t mean we stop listening to them, attending their church or loving them in Jesus. Just remember our pastors are human, they need encouragement and prayer and support from us as it is a heavy load to bear.

Be teachable, if you disagree with a brother or sister in Christ on a matter of faith that does not effect salvation, then agree to disagree for now and let God reveal to you and them over time or through others on the matter. It may be we won’t know till heaven and this is okay. Trust God to reveal to you as you read His Word and through discernment what is important.

Strive to understand who He is, how He lived when on earth, what His characteristics are, and what His promises to you are. This is how to build a relationship.

Read the Word of God daily

Joshua 1:8
“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”

The bible is God’s written Word. When we pray to Him to ask Him to talk to us and to guide us in life, He most often will do it through His written Word. Consistent daily reading is the way to get to know the true character of God and to get direction for our lives and for how we are expected to live. When we go to the bible for our teachings about God and how to be a Christian, then we won’t be misled by someone else’s opinions.

God will help us understand the bible. At first, it might not make sense. But as you commit to daily reading, God will start revealing things to you that you didn’t see at first. This is also why we are supposed to meditate on the Scripture. By doing this, we will focus more on what was written and what it really means according to God.

Our minds are amazing. It is impossible to run out of space. We are unlimited in our ability to memorize Scripture. Don’t believe me? Try for yourself!

Worship God, and only God

God created us to fellowship with Him and to worship Him. To God, there is no greater sound than to hear His children praising Him and thanking Him for all He is and all He has done and will do. This is the way to defeat the devil when he is attacking you; sing and speak praise to God the Father and rebuke the enemy in the Name of Jesus.

Luke 4:8
“Jesus replied, ‘The Scriptures say,
You must worship the LORD your God
and serve only him.’”
Hebrews 12:28
“Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.”
Romans 12:1
“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.”

Be obedient to the Word and Voice of God

We don’t have to do works to be saved, but God wants us to do works to help unbelievers get saved and to help other believers. Just like we were rescued from the grips of death, others all over the world need help, too. God wants us to use the knowledge and gifts and strength and power He gives us to help grow His Kingdom.

Each of us has something we can do or give that will glorify God and show us as an example of Jesus. Each of us can offer to help and to be light in a dark place. Each of us are called by God to be ready to give testament to our faith in Jesus; that is, to share with others the greatness of Jesus and why we believe.

And, each of us can at least be an encouragement to those who are discouraged and feeling hopeless. It is not for us to judge anyone. Jesus said; “All who believe can be saved.” We must not look at someone who is deep in sin and say that he or she isn’t worthy. None of us are worthy. Remember, God extended His grace to us, and we too, must extend His grace to others, without prejudice.

John 14:15
“If you love me, obey my commandments.”
John 13:34
“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.”
Matthew 28:19-20
“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Have a discerning spirit

The devil is clever and crafty. He is the Master of lies and deception. He has no mercy and will not let up until we are dead. He isn’t omnipresent like God. Therefore, he can’t be everywhere at once. However, he has many workers in his huge army who are at his beck and call. This means, wherever we are, there is likely one of his workers watching for our point of weakness.

Satan is like a thief who comes into our house through open windows and doors. Any sin in our life is an open door or window for Satan, and he will most definitely come in. As soon as we open the doorway to sin in our life, we are effectively giving Satan the power to rule over us and destroy us.

God warns us to do away with the old sinful nature and to put on the Spirit of God (Galatians 19-23). Also, He warns us to put on the Armor of God so that we can stand firm against the devil (Ephesians 6:10-17).

1 Peter 5:8
“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”
1 John 4:1
“Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.”

We are God’s children, and nothing can change that

One more thing Satan will do, and he will do this as often as possible, is to make us question what God says and our Salvation. Salvation is ours if we accept Jesus and believe. If we sin and make mistakes, this doesn’t disqualify us from Salvation. The following verse in this section is necessary because many people can get to believing the lies of Satan.

There is spiritual warfare going on around us and in our mind. We can protect ourselves by learning the truths of the Scripture and by memorizing key verses. These are promises of God, who cannot lie or sin. If God said it, it’s true.

When we first believe in Jesus, we are given a Seal from God. The Holy Spirit marks us as God’s Special Possession. There is nothing that can ever steal us away from God. There is an unpardonable sin, and this is the complete rejection of the Holy Spirit. If you have asked Jesus into your heart, this will be of no concern to you.

Romans 8:38-39
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Making a decision for Christ is life-changing. God changes our life as He molds our character and beliefs and we also change our lives as we choose to not live in sin anymore. This often requires us changing our friend groups, changing habits, and denying ourselves certain pleasures. But with Jesus, it’s worth it.

The Christian life is likened to a verb; not a noun. We are called Christians and we can say we are Christians, but it’s by our fruit, that is, by how we live that shows whether we are a true Christian or not.

Living as a Christian might seem difficult to some, but we are reminded in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. We are given power directly from God to go forth and boldly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus. As we grow closer to God, the Message of Jesus becomes more important to us to share.

At first, as unbelievers, we’re blind. When we become believers, and as we learn the bible and develop our relationship with God, He opens our eyes and fills us with His Wisdom and Knowledge and Understanding.

Jesus is knocking at your door right now to reconsider your life, how you live, and where you want to spend eternity. Even for current believers, Jesus will continue to challenge us to live to His highest standards. We can always grow, right?
