Doubt is a dream killer. Trying to follow God and live the life He desires for you while living in doubt will wear you down and ultimately, defeat you. You will be miserable, and you will fall short of all your ambitions. Doubt is one of those things that completely blocks the blessings of God and getting your prayers answered.
It’s important to not spend much time in doubt. Doubt is a trait of the devil. He will come to you and put thoughts of doubt into your mind as often as possible, because he knows how damaging this is. It literally has the power to keep you out of Heaven. And, if you don’t go to Heaven, what’s left for choices? Only Hell, right?

So, I want to help you in this article to understand that doubt is something that not only can be done away with, but it must be done away with. I struggled with doubt for years. For me, it happened every time I would pray. I would kneel down and talk to God. I would confess sin and I would give Him praise. That was all fine. However, when I would request anything from Him in prayer, that’s when I would get overpowering thoughts in my mind that seemed to say, “You’re not going to get that; God’s not going to answer you; You don’t deserve that so God won’t give it to you.”
These thoughts came to me right as soon as I asked God for anything that would help me or make my life better. I got to the point at one time where I just refused to ask God for my own needs because I believed that it wasn’t going to happen anyway. I understood that doubt had the power to kill my prayers, so I gave up because I didn’t know how to overcome the doubt at that time.
But I learned, and I found out it’s simple. And, I want to help you learn, too.

Doubt is from the devil
“The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day he asked the woman, ‘Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?’”
The first sin in the world came about based on doubt; “Did God really say?”
The enemy has been doing this to everyone since the beginning. “Why fix what isn’t broke,” he says. And, for him, this is true. He is very successful at taking people down through doubt. He prevents people from reaching their highest potential through doubt. He causes people to take their own lives through doubt. Doubt is dangerous, so it must go.
Doubt is a characteristic of the devil. If you follow Jesus, you can get rid of the devil and his doubt. If you don’t follow Jesus, you will not be successful at defeating the devil. Without the Spirit of God, you only have your sinful nature and the spirit of Satan. Someone with the spirit of Satan can’t cast out Satan. Only the Spirit of God has power over the devil.
“For God wanted them to know that the riches and glory of Christ are for you Gentiles, too. And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.”
Turning to Jesus and accepting Him as Lord and Savior is how you get Salvation. When you do this, Jesus comes into you to live in you and you are filled with the Holy Spirit to help you, 1 Corinthians 6:19 also says that the Holy Spirit lives in you. With Him in you, you have the power to kick out the enemy and stop living in sin.
Then you can say, “Satan, I command you to leave in the name of Jesus,” and he must. You can say, “I cast this spirit of doubt off me in the name of Jesus,” and it must leave. After this, you only need to believe that the Lord has done His work to help you and as the devil comes along next time and tries to get you to doubt, as he will, you can ignore the thought of doubt and replace it with a promise from God.
Learn the Word of God
“For the LORD God is our sun and our shield.
He gives us grace and glory.
The LORD will withhold no good thing
from those who do what is right.”
The bible is the written Word of God. Through many authors, God gave us instruction on how to live and how to follow Him. He also gave us many promises throughout the bible. Although some promises appear to be specific to certain individuals of times past, they are still relevant to you and me. God has no favorites and His Word is timeless; what He does for one child of God, He will do for another.
If you are following Jesus, you are a child of God. He hears and answers the prayers of those who follow Him. So, if you are praying and you have a relationship with Jesus Christ, then He will hear you and will help you.
God promises to not leave you hanging. He says in Isaiah 41:10 that He will help you and uphold you.
“But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted!”
Reading the Word of God is the way to build a relationship with Jesus. Daily interaction through praying and reading will bring you closer to God. As you grow closer to God, you will distance yourself from the enemy. As this happens, the promises of God will become clearer and more apparent to you, and so will the lies of the devil.
Seek God daily, and you will win against the devil. Learn the Scripture and every time the devil comes with a lie or doubt, speak out a promise of God that applies to His children and send the devil away.
Grow your faith
“So, faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.”
Learning about Jesus is so important to growing in your faith. Spiritual maturity happens through growth. If you are a Christian, but don’t spend any time in the Word of God or learning about Jesus, you won’t grow. Your knowledge will be limited, and you will remain spiritually young. The goal for the Christian is to move towards maturity and help others get there, too.
Faith in God isn’t a spiritual gift that God only gives to some of His children. We all have the ability to have faith. Faithfulness is one of the nine characteristics, called the fruit of the Holy Spirit, who lives in believers of God (Galatians 5:22-23). This means that if you have God’s Spirit in you, you also have His characteristics in you.
Having faith is choosing to believe something you cannot see. Interestingly, accepting doubt is choosing to believe something you cannot see. Doubt, fear, worry; these all take a level of faith. Believing in Jesus and the promise of God takes faith. But faith in Jesus is the one you want. It’s the one that will bring you to spiritual maturity and eternal life.
Read through Hebrews 11, which is the chapter of faith. The people that are listed there all practiced faith, and because of their faith, God worked in their lives. Go through the bible and read the stories of these people and see how they applied faith and overcame issues. See how God blessed them because of their faith. He will bless and reward faith today just as He did for others back then. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Try to remember any times that you know that God answered a prayer or helped you out. Remember these when the enemy comes with doubt. As God answers more prayers and works in your life, use these to grow in faith and minimize doubt. The more you practice operating in faith, the easier it will get; the more you learn the character of Jesus and what He has done for you and is going to do for you, the easier it will be to put your trust in Him.
If you are struggling with doubt, seek God even more. This is not the time to pull back. If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus, you will continue to struggle with attacks from the devil. But by simply accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior, you will become powerful over the enemy. If you are already a Christian and are struggling with doubt, bring it to God and ask Him to help you with it.
Search yourself for any openings to the devil; look for any strongholds he might have in your life. If you are living in sin, he will be able to attack you and bring you down. You won’t be able to kick him out if you have sin in your life.

Get right with God, study the Word of God, and get to know Jesus. Learn about the promises that are available to you as a follower of Jesus and understand that God wants you to have the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4). In knowing this, when you pray, expect that God will answer your prayers. If you believe that it would please God for your request to be answered, then believe He will answer it.
Don’t allow doubt to be part of your prayers anymore. I too had to pray about doubt itself, I had to cast it off using the name of Jesus, and I had to choose to focus on what God says is true for his children, not what Satan says. This is how I found freedom over doubt and I believe you can, too!
