How To Break Free From Gripping Negative Emotions

Are you feeling stuck in a bad mood? Does it feel like nothing will ever get better? Well, it’s not likely to get better when you’re stuck in a negative emotional state. It’s like you are held hostage by your emotions. I’ve been there lots. But it can and will get better if you improve your mood. In this article, I want to help you develop a method to go from a bad mood to productive and happy. But it’s going to take some work from you.

Suppose you find a way that you can reset your mood within a minute or two; would you use it? For me, I’ve always been moody. Not so much just grumpy or angry, but kind of all over the map. Some days I’m happy and hopeful and sometimes within that same day, depressed and about ready to give up. So, for me, I’ve had to work out a way to snap out of my negative moods as quickly as possible.

It’s our daily choices and actions that give us our results and life circumstances. If you’re tired of living in negative circumstances like I was, you’ll need a way to stay as happy and positive about life as possible. Because, when life is good and you’re feeling optimistic, you’re less likely to make poor choices. Most of my worst choices have been made when depressed, in an attempt to make myself feel better. This resulted in much debt due to financing motorized toys that I thought would help.

Needless to say, going into debt only created a new problem in my life. But I’ve learned that I can turn to God and I can be refreshed and helped without going into debt or taking drugs or alcohol or any other crutch. And I’ve found that I’m most successful with this when I act quickly as I notice myself slipping into a bad or negative mood.

What’s so wrong about a bad mood anyway?

Nothing good comes from a bad attitude. Not every negative emotional state produces a bad attitude, but every negative emotional state doesn’t reflect the image of God’s character. These emotions tend to reflect those of Satan. Nowhere in the bible does it say to take a pity-day or to spend time angry and bitter. But everywhere in the bible encourages productivity and doing good for the Kingdom of God.

It’s Satan who likes you to be in a lowly state. When he can get you there, he can do damage to you. God doesn’t want you to get defeated by Satan. He wants you to wake up and start your day in the power of the Holy Spirit; He wants you to seek the Holy Spirit for help. This is why He gave you His Spirit as a Helper when you accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior.

The Holy Spirit is likened to the best tool in the toolbox that nobody fully utilizes. He is your Helper. Don’t confuse this with a magic Genie that’s at your beck and call. But instead, a Holy Guide for your life; protection for your spirit; strength for your weaknesses. And if you are a Christian, He’s in you right now. When you call on Jesus, the Holy Spirit is right there with you, giving you the words to pray. When you don’t know what to pray, He will fill in for you as you pray. The Holy Spirit is your Helper and comforter.

The bible tells you in John 14:16 that God will send you a Helper who will never leave you. It’s through the Helper, the Holy Spirit, that you are strengthened and able to resist the attacks of the devil. If you don’t seek help from the Lord, and you continue to allow yourself to stay in a negative mood, the devil will keep pressing you until you make a bad choice or do something you’ll regret.

It’s Satan’s plan to knock you down and make you feel like you’re no good. If he can do this, he can cause distance between you and God. Because, when you’re in a bad mood and don’t feel good about yourself, it’s difficult to surrender to God and seek His help. I know this because I’ve lived it for many years.

Scripture and worship are the keys to freedom

Of all the things I’ve tried; medicine, counselling, sleep, distractions, and mind-altering substances, nothing has worked better than turning to God in full surrender. Seeking Him more and digging into His Word are the only true ways I’ve found joy when in a bad state of emotion.

If the devil is beating you up, stop giving in to him. Learn to recognize his attacks and his methods and when you are experiencing an attack, turn to God for strength. The very first thing Satan will tell you is that God won’t help, so it’s no use. This lie has worked for him countless times, so he keeps using it. But understand, God will help you and will lift you up to a better emotional state if you’ll give Him a chance.

Take some time away and read the bible. Pray. Talk to God about what’s going on. Ask Him for strength and seek His protection from the enemy. Praise Him and thank Him for all the good in your life. This is the quickest way to overcome an attack from the devil and to remain productive for the Lord.

Knowing Scripture by memory is the best method here. When you’re experiencing certain moods, having encouraging Scripture that you can say out loud and repeat to yourself will help tremendously. Of course, unless you try, you won’t know. The bible has many verses that are worth remembering for times of trouble, but I’ll start you off with 5 in this article.

I’ve picked 5 negative emotional states and 5 Scriptures that will help directly with those moods and situations. But it’s up to you to learn them and use them when the devil is attacking you. Even God won’t make you reach out to Him and ask for help. You must submit to His authority and seek His hand first, then you’ll have the power to resist the devil and send him away (James 4:7).

Here’s my list of 5 negative emotional states, and for each, I’ll provide a Scripture to learn:

  • Sadness
  • Worry
  • Impatience
  • Loneliness
  • Anger

Sadness

Psalm 34:18
“The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart,
And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”

Thanks to King David and all his contributions to the book of Psalms, there is Scripture for virtually every mood. David had many ups and downs, and through it all, he shared his feelings with God.

If you are sad about something, go to Jesus who is your Comforter and Healer. He will lift you up and help you feel better. Sadness is an emotion that seems like there’s no relief that can take away the pain, but when you shift your focus onto Jesus, He gives you peace and comfort.

Worry

Psalm 55:22
“Cast your burden on the LORD,
And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.”

Worry, fear, doubt; these are the most common attacks of the devil. He will cause you to worry as often as possible, because with worry comes destruction. Worry can destroy anything good. It is a huge factor in the deterioration of people’s health every day. It will literally eat away at you and break you down to the point where you don’t eat or sleep or do anything good that your body and soul needs. This is why Satan uses this tactic.

But God wants you to cast your cares on Him. Whatever is worrying you, give it to God immediately. Let it go. God will work it out if you trust Him. He will keep you firm-footed and in good standing if you trust Him instead of acting on your thoughts of worry.

Impatience

Isaiah 40:31
“But those who wait on the LORD
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.”

Waiting on the Lord is always the winning strategy. No, you can’t see what God is doing in the background. All you can see is the turmoil in your life and the hardships you’re facing. But know that He’s doing something. Whatever it is you’re waiting for God to do, keep waiting and trusting that God will work it out in the best way possible.

If you’re doing a good thing for God and are experiencing hardships, persecution, or any other difficult situation, bring it to God and keep doing good. God will work it out in the best way according to His plan for you. In the end, if you keep up the good work, God will lift you up and you’ll be richly rewarded.

Loneliness

Isaiah 41:10
“Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

No matter where you are, God is with you. He’s omnipresent. This means, He’s everywhere always. You can’t hide from Him or hide anything from Him. He’s omniscient. This means He knows everything. Even when you’re secretly lonely, He knows. Finally, He’s omnipotent. This means He’s all powerful. No matter what your situation is, God can help.

The beauty of having the Holy Spirit right within you is that you can always call on Him and be comforted. You always have a friend with you who is alive and able to console you. If you are lonely in life because you have no good friends to confide in, get involved with a church life group and you will certainly gain some quality friends.

If you are without a life-mate to enjoy your life with, ask God for the perfect partner and be patient. The only way you’ll meet people is if you’re around people. Don’t lock yourself up in isolation. Also, know the kind of person you want to do life with and search for that person in that environment.

If you want someone who shares your interests, get involved with community groups and such that do what you love. God is not slow to provide. In the perfect timing, God will provide you with a perfect partner. Trust Him and seek His direction. Don’t rush into anything.

Anger

Ephesians 4:31-32
“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”

Oh, the years I’ve wasted being angry and bitter. About what? Who knows. That’s how important it was; I can’t even remember now. Yet, I lost sleep, jobs, friends, and a whole host of other good things in my life to countless days of having a bad attitude due to anger and bitterness.

This Scripture isn’t so much as comforting as it is necessary. God doesn’t want you to remain angry. Anger is a natural emotion, but He doesn’t want you to live in it. Jesus got mad, but He didn’t sin by letting it consume Him. That’s exactly what God wants you to do also.

If you are upset or bitter about something, it’s time to confront it head on and deal with it. If this issue is with someone, it might mean that you need to humble yourself and go and apologize for something you might not feel like you are responsible for. But by doing this, the relationship can be mended, and God will be pleased with you.

If this issue is with your spouse, make right with them before going to bed tonight. Forgive and let them off the hook. If necessary, apologize and ask forgiveness. Seek out ways to get along and have fun. So many couples have huge potential to live an amazing life together for God, yet they spend so much time bickering that they can’t even barely stand each other. Don’t join this statistic. Set yourself free today!

Be in control of your thoughts

The devil will get in your mind. If you let him, he’ll make you miserable. Once he does get in there and starts injecting negative thoughts, you’ll find yourself on a slippery downward slope that’s hard to recover from.

Instead, learn how to see the signs of negative thinking and emotions and counter them before they set in. The best way is laid out in this Scripture:

Philippians 4:8
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”

I am still working at this daily, and even though it’s not pretty, I’ve been doing better. I know that if you apply your effort and do what this Scripture is telling you, especially when you’re experiencing negative emotions, you’ll come out feeling much better. You’ll be back to productive in no time.

God desires for you to be in a good mood and excited about life. Regardless of what the devil tries to throw at you from every direction, God wants you to come under His protection and keep your focus on seeking Him.

Spend as much time as possible learning about Jesus and how you can improve your relationship with Him. Apply what you learn and you won’t be a victim in this vicious cycle of negative emotions any longer.

Conclusion

How are you feeling? Are you tired of being beat down and ready to get up and fight? Good. Turn to the Lord and pray about what you’ve read today in this article. Ask God to help you gain control where you’ve lost it and seek His direction for your life.

Resolve to not allow any more time to be lost to the games of the devil. Fill your mind so full of Jesus and there won’t be any room for Satan. This is how you can have victory and freedom in your life. This can happen immediately. Even though the devil will continue to try to bring you down throughout your life, apply what you’ve learned in this article and make an immediate and deliberate choice to stay with God and to resist the devil.

You’ll win every time!
