5 Lies Satan Will Make You Believe If He Can

Does the devil talk to you? Does he try to tell you things that make you feel bad or unworthy? You’re not alone. The bible tells us that the devil is here to steal, kill, and destroy, and in this article, I want to expose some common lies he tells us as an attempt to accomplish his plan.

You may have had these thoughts come across your mind periodically throughout life or might at some point. It’s important to understand that this kind of thinking is directly from the devil. The Spirit of God will only use words of wisdom and kindness and that which is meant to build you up.

Seek discernment from God through prayer as often as possible. The devil is smooth and can often infiltrate your thoughts for some time before you even realize he’s there. But with some practice of putting on the Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17) and forming a new habit of kicking the devil out of your life, you’ll be able to spend more time in the peace of God that seems so elusive and less time feeling like a worthless failure, if that’s how you’ve been feeling.

I can relate to this as I have spent most of my life feeling like a worthless failure. Even now, Satan puts thoughts of self-hate and self-condemnation into my mind. The difference for me now is that I’ve learned to discern between thoughts that are good and those that are evil. This article won’t tell you all the lies that the devil may tell you, but it will get the idea across to you that you need to pay much attention to the thoughts that do cross your mind.

Whichever thoughts you feed by pondering them and agreeing with them are the thoughts that will grow. The thoughts you ignore are the thoughts that will starve off and die. Take your thoughts captive and only allow those that build you up.

5 lies Satan might tell you

Although you might not ever hear these exact phrases, you are likely to hear some that are similar. The idea behind Satan’s lies is to make you feel less adequate and to ultimately separate you from a relationship with God.

It seems a bit counterproductive to turn away from God when Satan is attacking you, but this is common. When the devil says things to you that make you feel like God can’t love you or doesn’t want you, it’s hard to feel like running directly into the arms of God, right?

But that’s exactly what God wants you to do. The devil is called the liar and the tempter and the deceiver for a reason. The closer you get to God, the less you will fall for the devil’s schemes. But this takes effort on your part and may take some time. It will surely yield some failed attempts, but stick to it. Getting rid of negative thinking is the best thing you can do now and for your eternal future.

Lie #1

You are no good

In a world that seems to be only evil, it’s very common to feel like you are no good. It’s not that everyone wants to be evil or do evil, but the sinful nature that’s within each of us will lead us into sin from time to time.

You might do something wrong, break a rule or a law, hurt someone’s feelings, or hold a grudge against someone. And, although these actions are forgivable, the devil will come along and make you feel bad. He will tell you that you’re no good and that you’ve messed up.

Well, he’s right; you have messed up, and apart from God, you can’t be good. The bible says;

Luke 18:19
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good.”

If you do have a relationship with God and spend time with Him often and your faith is in Him, then He is in you. You apart from God only have your sinful nature and the spirit of evil, but when you accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, the Spirit of God comes and makes His home in you, and you and Him become one.

It’s the Holy Spirit in you that is good. This is where you need a good understanding of who you are in Christ and who you are without Christ.

There are many religions that say that Jesus doesn’t matter or that He’s only a prophet and not God. This is a deception of the devil and you need to know that it’s Jesus who saves and Jesus who gives you life.

Accept Jesus and learn to follow Him. When the devil tries to make you believe that you’re no good, ignore him and turn your attention to Jesus. If you are in the wrong or have wronged someone, seek forgiveness and move on.

Lie #2

You can’t do anything right

Trying to live perfectly will end in disaster. You won’t be made perfect until God calls you home, and that’s assuming you’ve chosen to live for Him. God really only has a small handful of requirements and these are: trust and believe in Jesus and receive Salvation, and, do good through love. That about covers it. But Jesus was the only person on earth who didn’t sin, and nobody will ever be able to live up to that standard as a human on earth.

The Apostle Paul summed this problem up in this Scripture:

Romans 7:18-20
“And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.”

Paul, the great Apostle, struggled with sin just like you and me. Satan attacked him the same way he attacks us. But Paul learned that this is an ongoing battle and the only way to find victory in this is to surrender to God and resist the devil.

When Satan comes along and tells you that you can’t do anything right, ignore him and remember; all the “Greats” of the bible couldn’t do anything right either. Many of them sinned terribly. But they didn’t give up and give in to the devil. They persisted and remained faithful to God, and through God’s power in them, they prevailed.

You can, too!

Lie #3

Nobody likes you

This is a very common feeling to have. Many of us have been here a time or two. Satan will tell you that nobody likes you as often as possible because if he can get your esteem down and as low as possible, you won’t want to be around people. And, when you’re alone, you’re vulnerable; just the way the devil wants you.

When you think about it, God is the only one you should be concerned about, anyway. Does God like you? Of course. This is something you can read about in the bible and you will know this in your heart more as you grow deeper in a relationship with God. Spend as much time with God as possible and you will see what I mean.

Galatians 1:10
“Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.”

If you are feeling like nobody likes you, then you just need to switch up your focus. Instead of worrying about what others think, think about how you can help others. God didn’t create you to feel good and to be popular and to live a lavish life, He created you to worship Him and to do His work. This should be your first focus.

But feeling liked and loved and wanted is a built-in need each of us has, so if the people you hang around now don’t fill this need, then God will. Not only will He give you peace in your heart, He will give you good friends in Christ – those in the church who are the body of Christ and have been given spiritual gifts meant to build you up. And, guess what? You’ve also been given spiritual gifts meant to build those in the church up, too.

Reach out and you will find the love of God.

Lie #4

Jesus can’t forgive you

Although this is a very popular lie, it’s ridiculous. Jesus forgave the people who crucified Him. Is it not possible for Jesus to forgive you?

Don’t let the devil fool you by telling you that Jesus can’t forgive you. If you ask Jesus for forgiveness, He will do it immediately. Through faith, accept this from Him.

1 John 1:9
“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”

There is a way that Jesus won’t forgive you; that’s if you don’t ask. The devil will try to make you believe that you can’t be forgiven. He will keep reminding you that you are a sinner, a repeat offender, who is only making God mad. He will keep doing this to you until you start to believe that Jesus can’t forgive you.

The issue then becomes bitterness. Bitterness towards the Spirit of God. This is a big issue because if you allow bitterness towards God to grow within you, you will not only refuse to accept Jesus, you also won’t be willing to seek forgiveness.

It’s through surrender to the devil that your heart can be hardened to the point where Jesus can’t forgive you. Jesus won’t force you to follow Him. But His desire is that you do. And, if you’re willing, He will forgive you and accept you and heal you.

Don’t buy the lie that Jesus can’t forgive you. The Apostle Paul murdered Christians and look what God did with Him. Don’t underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit to work in your life.

Lie #5

You can’t go to Heaven

Guess what? Salvation is for everyone who will believe in Jesus and accept Him as Lord and Savior. Salvation is a free gift from God for those who follow Jesus. If you have a heart for Jesus and desire to follow Him each day, you’re on your way to Heaven!

Satan is desperately trying to trick people into thinking there isn’t a Heaven or that they aren’t good enough to go to Heaven. Well, as surely as there’s a Hell where Satan is going, there’s a Heaven where Jesus’ followers are going. The question is: are you a follower of Jesus?

Luke 9:23
“Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”

Following Jesus isn’t a “set it and forget it” thing. Following Jesus is a daily decision and frankly, it can be a tough one. This is because the devil can’t stand the idea of losing another person to Eternal Life with Jesus. So, for this reason, he is likely to go after you even more. But don’t let this scare you; God’s strength is in you and Satan is weak against the Holy Spirit.

John 3:16
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

As for who goes to Heaven, well, let’s not let Satan decide, right? The bible clearly states that those who accept the Father’s Son will gain eternal life. Eternal life is with God in Heaven. Eternity in Hell is considered as death in the bible. Don’t confuse the two.

If you love Jesus, you’re going to Heaven.

And, if this isn’t convincing enough, I want to leave you with a final verse concerning God’s love for you:

Romans 8:38-39
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Have you believed the lies of the devil? It’s okay. You’re not alone. Trust God. Seek Him daily and strive to live according to His Will for your life. As the days go by, you’ll have ups and downs and the devil will be right there waiting for a moment of weakness.

If you do struggle with sin periodically, surrender to God and seek forgiveness. Don’t put it off. Jesus died to make atonement for your sins. All you have to do is ask Him and He forgives.

The devil wants you to have a poor image of yourself, but God wants you to focus on Him and serving others. The only image you are required to have of yourself is of the Spirit of God in you. You were created to serve God and to be a vessel for God. The more time you spend with Him in prayer and worship and bible reading, the more of His Spirit will be revealed in you.

The bible says that you can identify followers of Christ by their fruit (Matthew 7:16). The Fruit of the Spirit of God is; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). When these are revealed through you, then you can be sure your self-image is pleasing to God.

Don’t allow the devil to work his way into your life through lies. Shut him up, kick him out, and close the door behind him. Seek Jesus daily and put your full trust and focus on Him. Then you will find true victory over the enemy.
