Are you burdened and in need of rest?

How tiresome and overwhelming this life can get for us as we go about trying to keep up with all our obligations and regular tasks. Trying to make it through our days when we have sleepless nights, trying to balance all things in perfect harmony. But how long can we do this on our own? At what point do we suffer breakdown of health and spirit?

It is true that we must work and live and take care of children and family. We must be responsible to maintain an upright life in the eyes of society to avoid turmoil or negative consequence. But we must understand that we don’t need to carry the full weight of this burden. Yes, our lives, as good as they might be at times, can also be a burden.

God wants to help you. He already knows you very intimately, as He created you. But God is patient and He wants you to reach out to Him for help. God desires to have a relationship with you and to help you.

His intentions aren’t that you work yourself to sickness trying to manage pressures, stresses, and worries that surely come up everyday. Instead, God wants to take that weight from you today and give you rest and refreshment. But you have to want it. You have to cry out to Him and ask Him and prepare yourself to receive it.

Jeremiah 31:25
“For I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing.”

God wants to give us rest and help us. This is His nature. God is not only a powerful God who is able to unleash His wrath and vengeance on those who come against Him, but also a loving and graceful God who seeks to provide for, and protect, and teach those who love Him.

No matter what we try to accomplish, buy, or create, true joy and rest come from a relationship with Jesus, Son of God.

5 scriptures that show God is in control and will help us when we turn to Him

To further illustrate God’s infinite love for us and His willingness to provide and protect, I will share five bible verses that are a refreshment to me in times of discouragement. God knows that we will have times of sorrow, that there will be times where it all just seems to fall apart for us; it’s in these times of our weakness where God’s unfailing love and power are showcased best.

Read through these for now and as you read through the bible to learn more of God’s Word, strive to find a collection of your favorite promises of God that you can memorize and have in a moment’s notice, when life seems to become too heavy to carry. Be sure to trust God with your most intimate matters. He is a faithful God who will surely help you come to peace in your heart over your worst troubles.

Here are five verses to help lift our spirit:

  • Psalm 91:14
  • Psalm 55:22
  • Isaiah 41:10
  • Matthew 6:33
  • Romans 8:28

Psalm 91:14

“The Lord says, ‘I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name.’” Click To Tweet

When we take a look at our own lives, what do we see? Do we see a perfect job or career? Do we see the perfect family with the most obedient children? Are we living safely? Do we have a life we desire?

These are all things that we in society seem to strive for the most. And, God knows that these are important. However, these are things that can work against us and even separate us from God. As we desire these things too intensely, or strive too much to attain wealth, these can all become an idol to us; that even though we don’t understand or see it, in God’s sight, we are effectively worshipping these things.

When we turn to Jesus and seek a life with Him, He is faithful to help us with whatever we are dealing with. God wants us to live peacefully and with great inner joy. So, if these things are important to you, then they can be important to God, too. However, your inner heart condition matters more to God.

Not everyone will find wealth, even though they seek it; not everyone will have a perfect body without ailment, even though they pray for it. God created us the way we are and can bless us and bring peace to us in whatever situation we find ourselves in currently.

The Lord is faithful to rescue those who cry out to Him. As we grow in the Lord, we will find that inner peace and joy is the rest we need. This is what allows us to sleep peacefully at night. And, this is exactly what God will bring to those who call on Him.

If we walk with Jesus and abide in Him, God will protect us and the things He blesses us with.

Psalm 55:22

“Give your burdens to the Lord, and He will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.”

Other scriptures read, “Cast your cares upon the Lord…” Whichever version you are familiar with, the promise is the same. Jesus is ready and willing to take the whole weight of our most troubling issues. It doesn’t matter whether it’s spiritual stuff, relationship stuff, parenting stuff, job stuff, or money stuff.

Jesus doesn’t specify exactly what our burdens might be, but rather, He is aware that we are all susceptible to having them periodically.

The idea here is that we learn to instantly cast these burdens onto Jesus and pray to Him for rest in difficult times. When we cast our issues on the Lord, we are wise to also pray for direction and wisdom to get through the situation in the best manner possible; even if it was our poor choice that led to the circumstance. I have too many of these kinds of past situations.

Sometimes the stresses and pressures in life aren’t caused by our poor choices, however. Sometimes, it can be an abusive spouse, a troubled teen, the loss of a job due to a failed economy. Jesus is the Master at comforting His people. When we trust Him with our issues, He helps us and gets us through it.

This scripture also seems to say that God will keep us upright and on our feet during the storms of life when we give our burdens to Him. I have personally been in a tight financial situation for many years and although much of it is due to poor choices, such as, financing above my means, God is faithful to provide for every bill and every debt we have. During this time, I have even been permanently laid off from a high-paying job with no chance of returning. Our economy collapsed and many of us lost jobs.

But my wife and I have been faithful to tithe for the last twenty years of our marriage, and we believe this pleases God. We believe we have trusted Him with our finances and our burden of debt, and He has kept us on our feet. We haven’t missed a payment, even at times when it didn’t make any logical sense.

Isaiah 41:10

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

If I can remember right, this is the first verse I memorized. I am drawn to this verse often. It’s not that I spend time in fear of various things like evil or people, but rather, that I struggle with not knowing the outcome of my family’s future. Because money has been tight since getting laid off, I find myself mulling over ideas of how to prosper in my mind.

The flaw with this is that I have run dry on ideas. So, I find myself fearing that my family will come to ruins because of my lack of provision.

However, this happens because I lose sight of God in these times. I get too caught up in trying to figure out what I must do that I forget to give the problem to God and allow Him to do what He wants to do. So, when I return to this verse, I am reminded of all the times He has been faithful to my family. We’ve always had our needs met, with food in the cupboards, and clothes on our backs and a roof over our heads.

This scripture doesn’t necessarily mean that God will provide great wealth and assets when it says that God will help us. Instead, I feel that God is telling us here that no matter how tight or difficult the situation gets, God will maintain a peace and joy and calmness within us so that we can keep our focus on Jesus and praise Him during this time.

I suppose this verse might be of comfort when we are in a dangerous situation. I will leave this to God to speak directly to you as to when and how He will help you and with what. As for me, even though seeking God in my struggles is an ever-learning task, I know that God is right where He always is – in the perfect place at the perfect time with the perfect solution.

Matthew 6:33

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

Oh, the struggles I have had with wanting for material possessions. Can anyone relate? My wife has always been the content and mature character in our relationship. Me, not so much. It seemed that this is where the enemy always kept me down. It got to the point that I couldn’t go for a drive through town without wanting a nice car or truck that I saw driving by.

But it far surpassed a simple vehicle. I fell victim to lusting for virtually all material things; boats, houses, vehicles, money, especially money, travel, clothing, and almost anything else the stores sold. This became such an unhealthy habit for me that I would literally fall into depression for up to a week at a time. Oh, what a miserable time this was for my dear wife.

As God has been working in me to help bring me to a place of maturity, I find myself now seeking the fulfilment of God and His peace more often. Sure, I still have contentment issues at times. But I am learning to seek Jesus and ask Him what His Will is in my life regarding the thing I’m wanting for. I have prayed and have received that which I’ve wanted many times, but also, I have prayed and never seemed to receive an answer. This is the hard part of trusting God.

We always want exactly what we pray for as fast as we can pray for it. But God, in His infinite wisdom, knows every pitfall that will come with our attainment of that item. God can see ahead what we cannot.

When we trust God and seek to live for Him, He then can bless us with the blessings that He see’s as “true” blessings; the one’s that will be an ongoing blessing.

You don’t have to do it all, all the time. Instead, Take the Day Off: Receiving God’s Gift of Rest , by Robert Morris

Romans 8:28

“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

Many people use this scripture to fit their situations. I think that God can certainly use this promise to suit any one of our situations. However, the verse is very clear to note that He is talking about those who are walking in His Will, that is, His desire for their life, and those who also love Him.

If we are living in known sin and are steadily making poor choices, can we really expect God to turn our negative consequences into positive experiences and blessings immediately?

I won’t tell you He will or won’t. Mainly because I don’t know what God will do for any individual. What I do know is that I spent the first seven years of my marriage as a drunk, and during this time, I did a lot of stupid stuff.

You know what I always did when disaster would strike? I would turn to this scripture and think that God would just turn it into a good thing. After all, I went to church on Sundays and I was familiar with the bible. However, much to my surprise at the time, He didn’t.

Later, as I sobered up in my years and came to a better understanding of who God is and what it meant to walk with God, I also learned that He does in fact, turn our difficult situations into better ones. But He can’t work with us if we are living in sin and not malleable.

I encourage anyone who is living in a tough situation to make a choice for Jesus and determine to live a life that is pleasing to Him. The hardships of your life might stick around for some time, but God is faithful to carry you through and lift you up. He might not give you brand new luxurious items or unlimited wealth, but He can give you a peace in your mind and a contentment that exceeds understanding in virtually any situation you’re in, if you will let Him.

Our walk with Jesus is a personal one. When I write articles like these, I can only draw from my own experiences and the understanding that God has given me. I believe God can speak to us through His scripture where we are at. This can be seen when we get something new out of chapters and verses we’ve read and known before and as we mature in Christ he will open up more understanding.

But what seems to be a constant in the Old and New Testament is that we are called to love the Lord, Jesus, and to live our lives according to His Will for us. We don’t need to know exactly what His plans are for our life, as He will make that path known on a daily basis as we trust Him to provide and lead. But we can be sure that it will be a fulfilling one and one that leaves us feeling rich when we are obedient to that plan.

  1. Just recently I’ve had this great burden in my life. Though it was painful, I experienced God’s comfort, great love, and amazing grace. Truly God is alive and He is just waiting for us to reach out to Him and lay our burdens unto Him.
